Interesting conversation with my coach Rob Pickering yesterday. The topic for discussion was a mantra we share at ActionCOACH….. “you don’t grow a business. You grow people and they grow the business“.

So here’s the thing. I 100%, categorically, unequivocally, as-if-my-life-depended-upon-it believe this. I really do!

And I shared with Rob that a little part of me gets sad when some of the members of teams I see – despite being given the opportunity and encouragement to learn and grow – just don’t want it or do anything with it.

They’re all good people. I’m making absolutely no judgement about that. I’m just stating an observation.

Then Rob told me about a client of his who – inspired by Clive Woodward’s reference to growth-minded people which he calls ‘sponges’ (as opposed to more fixed-minded people ‘rocks’) – created a thing in his business called “Sponge Club“.

Sponge Club is a regular session of coaching/training on personal and professional development which people in the business can freely choose to participate in or not.

It’s an interesting perspective isn’t it? Rather than a compulsory training session for all it’s by individual choice.

What are your thoughts?
